The University of Florida recently made Head Coach Billy Donovan a
millionaire. Donovan’s new contract is a six-year deal and will pay
the 35-year old coach $1.2 million per year. He didn’t even have to
say “final answer.”
The deal makes Donovan the second coach at the University of Florida
to be paid over 7 figures for their services. Head Football Coach,
Steve Spurrier, currently makes over $2 million per year. It also
brings Donovan even with Tubby Smith of the University of Kentucky as
the highest paid coaches in the Southeastern Conference. Donovan’s
previous contract paid him $750,000 per year.
Florida is not only investing in its coach but it has also made other
investments in its basketball program. They are building a new $10
million practice facility and recently made $8 million in renovations
to the O’Connell Center.
Donovan’s new contract comes on the heels of his team’s run to the
National Championship game this past season. Do you think he would
have gotten as big a raise if Mike Miller hadn’t hit that last second
shot that beat Butler in the first round?
